The Black Artists on Art exhibition series is organized by Unity Lewis, the grandson of the late Dr. Samella Lewis, the artist, historian, author, and educator who is often referred to as the godmother of Black art.

Samella Sanders Lewis is an African-American artist, working primarily as a printmaker and painter. She is also a published author, art historian and a former educator.

The Black Arts movement of the 1960s sought to expose the work of black artists that explored the distinct culture and experience of African American life.

Other honorees include Deborah Willis, Maren Hassinger, Simone Leigh, and Nicole R. Fleetwood.

In 2015, the Express published “Where Are Oakland’s Black Artists?” a story about Oakland co-curators Trevor Parham and Unity Lewis.
